Diabetic Eye Disease May Predict Heart Failure

Dr. Tien Y. Wong, MD PhD states according to a recent study, people who have diabetic retinopathy - diabetes-related damage to blood vessels in the retina have more than double the risk for heart fauilure that diabetics with healthy retinas.

Self-Defense: Everyone with diabetes needs a comprehensive, dialated eye exam at least once a year. People diagnosed with retinopathy or where detected should have a complete cardiac exam and regular follow-ups.

Tien Y. Wong, MD PhD, is professor and chair of opthalmology, Centre for Eye Reseasrch, University of Melbourne, East Melbourne, Australia, and senior author of a study of over 1,000 adults with type 2 diabetes, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
